I built a backyard golf simulator setup for $1,158, and the first thing I learned is that you can probably get away with a smaller net than I bought. My wife still gives me grief about the size of the hitting cage. Honestly, when I first put it together, even I thought it was too big. Here’s exactly what I bought, what it cost, and the trick I use to keep the ongoing costs down.

What I Bought

That’s $1,158 all in.

The Trick That Saves Me Money

The Rapsodo works by reading markings on the golf ball, and Rapsodo sells its own balls pre-marked for this. Problem is, a box of Rapsodo-marked Callaway or Titleist balls isn’t cheap. So instead, I bought the $10 marking template and stencil the Rapsodo pattern onto golf balls myself. Takes a few minutes per ball, and totally worth it.

Here’s the part that actually makes this work as a money-saver: I play a lot of public courses, and I’m constantly finding balls other golfers lost in the rough or the woods. As long as I keep finding Callaway Chrome Softs and Titleist Pro V1s on the course, I’m marking those instead of buying new ones, and I’m saving real money every time.

How Much Space You Actually Need

My backyard has plenty of room for a 10x10x10 cage, but you don’t need it that big. I went with the 10-footer and it’s been a running joke in my house ever since. My wife still brings up how oversized it looks every time someone new sees it. If I were setting this up again, I’d go with an 8x8x8 cage instead. Same swing room, smaller footprint, and probably a little less heat from my wife.

See It In Action

Here’s an actual swing off the mat, captured straight from the Rapsodo: a 4-hybrid into the net.

What I’d Change

Just the one thing: size. Everything else, the mat, the net, the Rapsodo, the marking template, I’d buy again exactly as is. If you’re tight on yard space, the 8x8x8 size is the one to look at first. If you’ve got room to spare like I did, you still don’t need to go bigger than that unless you’re hitting driver off the mat regularly.
